Schleswig-Holstein as a logistics location benefits first and foremost from its excellent, central location within Europe between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. It allows logistics companies to be connected to important transport arteries and makes water transport an elementary advantage. The state can call the seven hubs Flensburg, Husum, Kiel, Brunsbüttel, Puttgarden, Lübeck and Travemünde its own, among others. In addition, the proximity to Hamburg guarantees access to one of the most important metropolitan regions in Europe. The metropolis can be reached from any location in Schleswig-Holstein within two hours.
Overall, Schleswig-Holstein is extremely interesting for the logistics industry due to its close connection to Baltic and Scandinavian markets. Eastern Europe and Scandinavia can be reached via the Baltic Sea as well as via the mainland. A large number of successful companies have been conducting their business from here for decades, taking advantage of the positive conditions. The state looks back on an important tradition and has long since made a name for itself as a logistics and trading location.
The water as a mode of transport is crucial for the location. Direct access to the North Sea and the Baltic Sea as well as the seaports guarantee maximum logistics attractiveness for the federal state. No other artificial waterway in the world is used as much as the Kiel Canal, which connects the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Around 40,000 ships pass through this waterway every year. Every year, around 15 million people are transported by sea and 43 million tonnes of goods are handled in the country's 30 seaports. The ports of Lübeck, Kiel, Brunsbüttel and the ferry port of Puttgarden are particularly substantial. The national cooperation network connects significant port locations such as Lübeck, Kiel and Brunsbüttel, where ships with a draught of 13 metres can be served in some cases.
The road transport mode offers a well-developed road network with the A 1, A 7, A 20, A 23 and A 24 motorways in all directions and a connection to the international long-distance transport network. Supra-regional transport routes are quickly reached. Thanks to the Öresund crossing between Sweden and Denmark, there are short distances for Scandinavian trade. In addition, the so-called Fehmarnbelt crossing is being planned. This 17.6-kilometre-long railway and road tunnel, which will connect the Danish island of Lolland with the German island of Fehmarn below the Baltic Sea, will also shorten transport routes. The rail network in Schleswig-Holstein is also well developed and extremely efficient. In air transport, however, Schleswig-Holstein is less well positioned.
Nevertheless, there are three major airports:
Hamburg Airport is considered an international hub and provides the state with access to international air traffic. Its proximity to Schleswig-Holstein provides the state with transport advantages. In addition to Hamburg, Lübeck-Blankensee Airport is indispensable for national air traffic and tourism. Kiel-Holtenau plays a major role with regard to general aviation. Sylt is mainly a summer destination for various airlines. Many smaller airfields such as Helgoland-Duene or Neumünster as well as special landing sites round off the spectrum.
There is a shortage of logistics space in Baden-Württemberg. In order to remain competitive, efficient logistics is necessary. This represents an opportunity for all logistics companies that can contribute to positive development in this respect. Due to the shortage of space in the state, the innovative use of existing properties and the further development of conversion areas are becoming increasingly important. There is potential in Mannheim, among other places, where development opportunities are recognisable due to vacant conversion sites in the city area. But Lahr in the Ortenau district is also an attractive location. The infrastructural connections are good and logistics and commercial space is available. Further location advantages are to follow through the expansion of the railway line. Despite the shortage of supply, there are still suitable warehouses, halls and contract logistics service providers in many places, such as Horb am Neckar, Albstadt, Kehl, Stuttgart and Ettlingen.
