The market potential that is opening up for logistics companies in Saxony-Anhalt is positively influenced by the demand from numerous companies and the proximity to Eastern Europe. Many well-known companies such as Dachser, DHL or Schenker have settled here to handle transports. Retail companies such as Edeka, Lidl, Rewe, Rossmann and Kaufland have distribution centres here. The location is particularly attractive for the automotive, timber, paper, chemical, air and express freight, plant and mechanical engineering, energy production / renewable energy generation and mining industries. Saxony-Anhalt is also known as a logistics research stronghold and is actively involved in the development of logistics processes and innovative systems. An effective network of basic research and industrial contract research is jointly managed by institutions, companies and universities.
With 600 kilometres of inland waterways linking a total of 18 ports and transshipment points, logisticians benefit from first-class transport conditions when using water as a mode of transport in Saxony-Anhalt. The elementary waterways are the Saale, Elbe, Elbe-Havel Canal, Havel, Mittellang Canal and the Lower Havel Waterway. The ports of Aken, Halle, Dessau-Roßlau, Magdeburg and Haldensleben offer trimodal connections. The port of Magdeburg is also the largest inland port in central Germany.
The local rail network is particularly advantageous. It is considered one of the densest in the world, is indispensable for freight transport and covers 3,100 kilometres. Deutsche Bahn alone owns around 2,000 kilometres. The network is excellently linked and well developed. One of the most modern train formation facilities in Halle/Saale is to be completed by 2017. Cost: 146 million euros. Saxony-Anhalt's road network measures 11,000 kilometres and is also excellently developed. The state is crossed by the four major motorways A 2, A 9, A 14 and A 38, thus securing connections to pan-European transport routes. Connections to Eastern Europe guarantee access to the Eastern European market.
The air transport mode also serves as a valuable support for the regional logistics industry. Leipzig/Halle is Germany's second-largest cargo airport. In Europe, the air cargo hub is among the top 10. The multiple "Air Cargo - Excellence Award" illustrates the importance of the airport. More than 910,000 tonnes of air cargo are handled here every year. Even the Antonov 225 and the Airbus A 380, currently the largest aircraft, can take off and land here. Every week, around 300 flights fly to more than 30 countries.
