Storage solutions for Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG)

Fast Moving Consumer Goods  (FMCG) are goods that are bought regularly and in large quantities by consumers. On average, they are bought more than three times a year by each consumer. They include food, cosmetics and care products, beverages, tobacco products, cleaning products and other articles for daily use. The storage of FMCG poses a great challenge, as these goods are mostly particularly sensitive. Furthermore, these products are bought and used frequently, are difficult to store and have to be continuously reproduced and replenished. This is because they are usually consumed within a few days or weeks of purchase. Most FMCG companies produce in small quantities and have a fast pace in the production process, which means they have to reorder frequently. The main challenges are fluctuations in purchase volume, high rates of purchasing and integrating new products into an already functioning supply chain.

Storage challenge for fast moving consumer goods

The industry is constantly looking for practical and cost-effective solutions to store and transport FMCG safely and in perfect condition. Storage optimisation is particularly necessary for companies that trade in these goods in order to get their products to customers quickly and efficiently. In this way, FMCG companies can reduce their costs and increase their profit margins. FMCG companies rely on inventory optimisation to get their products to their customers as quickly as possible. After all, the sooner a company sells its products, the better its profit. However, if items take too long to reach customers, they lose value and sell less. To make FMCG storage efficient and safe, it is important to choose the right storage solution. FMCG companies need to constantly adapt to the changing needs of customers. With good warehouse optimisation, they can always offer their customers the latest and best products.

Requirements for storage of FMCG goods

Some products also need to be stored in certain light scenes. For example, perfume must be stored in a dark place, otherwise the colour is lost. Other products, on the other hand, must be stored in a bright environment to fulfil their function. Food must be stored properly so that it does not spoil. If food is stored incorrectly, it can become mouldy, start to smell or even become harmful to health. To avoid this, you should follow a few simple rules when storing food:

  • No contact with gases or liquids
Secondly, food should never come into contact with other objects. Chemicals and objects with sharp edges in particular can damage and spoil food. It is therefore important to always store food in airtight and sealed containers.

  • Store at a suitable temperature and humidity
Food must always be stored in a cool place. If the temperature is too high, bacteria can survive in the food and cause it to spoil. The optimum temperature for storing FMCG is between 4°C and 8°C. Humidity should be between 40% and 60%. Adjusting the temperature too often can affect the life of the products, so make sure the temperature is always stable. Another important aspect of FMCG storage is humidity. The ideal humidity level for food storage is around 65 to 70 percent. If this limit is exceeded, mould can form. It is therefore particularly important that the humidity in the storage rooms is regularly checked and adjusted. Yoghurt, for example, must be stored at at least 50 percent humidity to prevent it from becoming too firm. The correct storage of food is of great importance, as it is decisive for whether the product spoils or not.

  • Do not store for too long
Food should only be stored in moderation. If food is stored for too long, it can lose its taste and quality. Therefore, it is advisable to store only the amount of food you actually need.
