Sustainable new building and more capacity in Upper Franconia - Geis puts "green" Ebersdorf freight forwarding terminal into operation
The internationally active Geis Group has put its state-of-the-art freight forwarding terminal in Ebersdorf near Coburg in Upper Franconia into operation. Geis Bischoff Logistics started operations there at the beginning of December with a 71-strong team; a further 10 employees will move in in January and the facility will go into full operation. The Geis Group has invested around 20 million euros in the sustainable location.
With the new terminal in Ebersdorf, Geis Bischoff Logistics is replacing the previous site in Lichtenfels. "The old site no longer met our current requirements, had reached its capacity limits and offered no expansion options," explains Hans-Wolfgang Geis, Managing Partner of the Geis Group. "In Ebersdorf, 11 kilometres away, we have found the ideal location - ideally connected via the A73 motorway and with plenty of space for our planned further growth."
More capacity for Upper Franconia
The new site covers around 44,000 square metres of land in the Ebersdorf West industrial estate. It comprises a freight forwarding terminal with 6,000 square metres of handling space, a three-storey office building with 1,300 square metres as well as a truck wash and a petrol station. 77 lorry loading and unloading gates enable fast and efficient goods handling. Branch manager René Seipel adds: "Ten ramp spaces in our new building are also designed for small lorries and Sprinters to optimally handle small goods and shipments to private recipients - particularly important due to the growth in online retail."
Prototype of a sustainable building generation
The Geis Group placed a clear focus on ecological aspects when building and operating its new site. "As part of our 'MissionZero', we want to make the entire Geis Group a climate-neutral company by 2040," emphasises Jochen Geis, Managing Partner. "With its green roof, photovoltaic system and hybrid timber construction, Ebersdorf is a prime example of sustainable buildings."
The "green" terminal is the first Geis building of a new generation. Wood plays a key role in the hybrid construction method - from the huge, 42-metre-long wooden beams to the façade of the office building. The green office roof not only optimises thermal insulation, but also contributes to a pleasant building climate.
After the company headquarters in Bad Neustadt, the Geis Group's second photovoltaic system is already located on the roof of the transshipment hall. In future, it will generate around 500,000 kilowatt hours of green electricity per year. The new building has a powerful large-scale storage system for its own electricity, which is used for electric vehicles, building technology and heating the offices via heat pumps. Other sustainable highlights include large roof light strips that ensure optimum use of daylight, the use of rainwater for the car wash and car charging points for employees and visitors.
Benefiting networks
The new location not only strengthens the Geis Group's own network, but also the largest German general cargo co-operation IDS. In addition to the significantly expanded capacities, the reorganisation of the IDS areas in
in the region also contributes to this. From Ebersdorf, Geis now serves other previously peripheral areas of its own IDS regions around Bad Neustadt, Nuremberg and Naila. This ensures shorter distances and free capacity in the other regions.
26 new jobs for the region
Geis Bischoff Logistics is significantly expanding its team in order to optimally serve customers in the expanded area. In addition to the 71 employees already working in Lichtenfels, 26 new jobs will be created at the start. The site is designed for a total of up to 120 employees.
Hans-Wolfgang Geis emphasises the importance of Upper Franconia as a strong economic region for the company. "In recent years, the region has become an extremely important market for the Geis Group. From Ebersdorf, we want to open up new customers and markets in and around Coburg with first-class service and comprehensive services."
