Prologis and Yusen Logistics open logistics facility on revitalised industrial site in Bottrop
Düsseldorf / Bottrop, 6 February 2025 - After just one year of construction, Prologis and Yusen Logistics (Deutschland) GmbH today jointly celebrated the opening of the modern logistics centre in Bottrop. Yusen Logistics will use the new facility as a European central warehouse for Mitsubishi Electric and commenced operations at the beginning of the year. With full capacity utilisation, 200 new jobs will be created, thus strengthening the region economically and supporting the local infrastructure.

"The strategic partnership with Prologis enables us to provide sustainable logistics solutions that meet our customer's needs," says Bruno Jacques, Managing Director Yusen Logistics (Deutschland) GmbH & Yusen Logistics (Benelux) B.V. "The new logistics facility will help Mitsubishi Electric increase its supply chain efficiency, improve resilience and make progress on sustainability targets - all of which are critical to their operations and growth in Europe."
Sustainability and well-being: Thinking holistically The 57,200 square metre logistics facility in Bottrop is an example of how Prologis consistently implements its approach to sustainable construction and social responsibility. Prologis is aiming for platinum certification from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) for the logistics facility - the highest accolade for sustainable construction in Germany. All buildings developed by Prologis in Germany have at least DGNB Gold certification.
"With the logistics facility in Bottrop, we are once again demonstrating how energy-efficient and people-orientated construction can go hand in hand with cost-effectiveness and long-term value creation," says Philipp Feige, Vice President, Head of Capital Deployment Germany at Prologis. "This project is an important part of our commitment to developing sustainable logistics properties that meet the highest standards while creating added value for customers, communities and investors."
The most important measures:
- Fully electric operation: thanks to modern heat pumps, the building is heated and cooled without the direct use of fossil fuels.
- Green exterior façade: This contributes to cooling the ambient temperature and enhances the appearance of the building.
- Water management: Cisterns and automated irrigation systems reduce the consumption of fresh water.
- Attractive working environment: Increased daylight, fitness area and green recreation zones promote the well-being of employees.
Prologis expands solar energy capacities The Bottrop facility is equipped with a 3.6 MWp solar power system - the largest that Prologis has ever installed in Germany. A total of 8,276 solar modules were installed. The electricity generated by the solar system corresponds to the average annual consumption of around 1,000 households (assuming that an average German household requires around 3,400 kWh per year). This benefits both Yusen Logistics and the regional power grid. Surplus energy is fed into the grid and is thus available to the region.
This project is part of Prologis' global solar energy initiatives. In Germany, solar systems totalling 37 MWp are currently installed on the roofs of Prologis' logistics properties, with more in the pipeline. The system in Bottrop was implemented as part of Prologis' Essentials programme, which offers customised solutions in the areas of energy, operations and mobility for customers. Prologis also advised Yusen Logistics in the area of operations.
New economic impetus instead of wasteland
The site on Braker Strasse had been an industrial site for a long time, first as an open-cast mine and then, since the 1970s, as the site of a steel-producing company. A comprehensive land management concept was developed in close co-operation with the city of Bottrop. In addition, the old steelworks infrastructure was demolished.
Paul Höller, State Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia: "The logistics sector keeps North Rhine-Westphalia on the move. With ultra-modern logistics hubs, we are making transport and storage more efficient and sustainable. This is how we secure our top position as a leading logistics location. In Bottrop, Prologis and Yusen Logistics have succeeded in creating an innovative logistics centre for heat pumps on a revitalised industrial site. This is good news for the entire region and shows that NRW offers attractive conditions and the space for forward-looking investments. Mitsubishi Electric's commitment also makes it clear that our state remains a top location for Japanese companies."
