Sustainable power generation: Photovoltaic system supplies Nagel-Group's logistics centre in the Allgäu region
Buxheim/Memmingen, 19 April 2023: Expansion completed and energy generation started: Nagel-Group has put a photovoltaic system into operation on the roofs of its Buxheim branch. The contract logistics centre, which specialises in the storage of dairy products, will use almost all of the energy generated on site for its own consumption. This will save the food logistics company over 1,600 tonnes of CO2 per year in future. The branch in the Allgäu region has recently been expanded and the storage capacity has been increased from 22,000 to 33,000 pallet spaces.
The photovoltaic system was installed on the roofs of the new building and the existing building. With an area of approximately 11,000 square metres, it produces around 1,800,000 kilowatt hours of energy per year, which corresponds to a long-term supply for around 480 three-person households. The plant will cover around half of the Buxheim branch's electricity requirements in future.

"As the logistics of sensitive, cold-sensitive food products is an energy-intensive process, we always endeavour to conserve environmental resources in the long term. For this reason, we want to generate the necessary energy ourselves," explained branch manager Mischa Kortner at the official commissioning.
The Nagel-Group invested around 15 million euros in the expansion and modernisation of the Bavarian site, and an automatic conveyor line with a connection to the high-bay warehouse was installed in the new building. "This investment enables us to offer our customers from the Allgäu region further growth opportunities. We are specially designed to meet the requirements of dairy products and are ideally positioned for cross-border flows of goods to Switzerland, Italy, Liechtenstein and Austria thanks to our convenient location directly at the Memmingen motorway junction," says Mischa Kortner.
Sustainability at Nagel-Group
As a family business, Nagel-Group believes in sustainable corporate management and harmonises economy, ecology and social issues. Nagel-Group is the first logistics company to be awarded the ZNU "Sustainable Management" standard in 2017. Nagel-Group already received the Lean&Green Award in 2016.
"As a ZNU-certified company, we rely on LED lighting, electric industrial trucks, which are now charged using self-generated electricity, and specially insulated loading gates that reduce energy loss during loading and unloading, in addition to the photovoltaic system in Buxheim. We also maintain green spaces in an insect-friendly manner and return surface water to the groundwater balance through infiltration," concludes Kortner.
