New BLG Mobile Harbour Crane Strengthens Project and Heavy Lift Logistics in the Port of Neustadt

Bremen, 11/21/2025 – BLG LOGISTICS is strengthening the Port of Bremen with a new Liebherr LHM 550 Mobile Harbour Crane. The crane significantly expands the capacities for handling project and heavy goods and sustainably improves the performance of the site. The acquisition was made as part of BLG's strategic investments in an efficient and future-proof port infrastructure.
The crane, which weighs around 440 tonnes, was delivered by water from the Liebherr production site in Rostock. After being transferred from the transport ship to a pontoon, the LHM 550 was driven ashore on its own axles at high tide. This is followed by final technical assembly, functional tests and acceptance. Regular operation of the crane is scheduled for around 14 days after arrival.
With a maximum load capacity of 154 tonnes, the LHM 550 covers a wide range of demanding handling requirements. Thanks to its long reach, even modern heavy-lift vessels can be handled efficiently. The mobility of the device – with ten driven axes – enables flexible use on different terminal surfaces. The possible shore power operation also supports lower-emission port logistics.
The new Mobile Harbour Crane is intended as a permanent and long-term addition to BLG's harbour crane fleet and provides long-term support for the growing requirements of the project and heavy-lift business at the Bremen site. It bears the name "FRANK" – a tribute to long-standing CEO Frank Dreeke, who has decisively shaped BLG's development over many years.
By expanding the existing crane fleet, twin operations with significantly higher capacity are now possible in the Neustadt port: Although two cranes were already able to work in tandem operation before, they could only work up to 220 tonnes. Together, the cranes can now lift loads of up to 280 tonnes, serving lifting capacities that were previously inaccessible. "With the new Mobile Harbour Crane, we can make our processes noticeably more efficient. Above all, the possibility of being able to move higher loads together with our existing equipment with a larger delivery at the same time opens up new scope for action in our day-to-day business, which closes an open flank, especially in the growing field of wind turbines," says Thorben Kolk, Managing Director of BLG Cargo Logistics.
Strong location for wind energy and international project cargo
The Neustadt port offers ideal conditions for the handling of complete wind turbines and has more than 100,000 square metres of storage space currently in use. If necessary, these areas can be significantly expanded. As a port far inland that can be reached deep in the seagoing ships, the location combines spacious logistics areas with direct water connections. This is a decisive advantage for wind energy, infrastructure and industrial goods, which depend on efficient transport between the hinterland and international markets.
The energy transition is leading to an increasing demand for assembly, packaging and distribution space. Thanks to its water connection, available space and high-performance handling infrastructure, the Neustadt port offers optimal conditions for this. The new LHM 550 creates additional capacity, especially for larger and heavier components, and noticeably increases the operational flexibility of the terminal. In addition, the successful landing of the new crane shows how flexible the location is: even unusual loads far above 280 tonnes can be handled safely and successfully with functional solutions.

The crane, which weighs around 440 tonnes, was delivered by water from the Liebherr production site in Rostock. Since the transport vessel could not reach the required quay height, the crane first had to be driven over onto a pontoon to enable a safe landing.

The following day, the crane was finally transferred from the pontoon to land at high tide. For this purpose, the pontoon was ballasted accordingly in order to reach the required quay height.

Thanks to the precise planning, the crane could be safely driven over ashore in the narrow flood time window.
