Mukran Port: Location underpins strategic importance for offshore industry

Mukran Port has been selected as Van Oord's base port for the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm, which will be built for Iberdrola in 2023 and 2024

Sassnitz-Mukran, 27 March 2023 - Van Oord, a specialist in maritime infrastructure projects, has selected Mukran Port as the base port for the handling and loading of 50 Transition Pieces (TPs). The first TPs have already been handled in the port and transported to their storage locations. The TPs are part of the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm for the Spanish energy company Iberdrola.

The 50 TPs, each measuring 15 metres long and 7 metres wide and weighing 240 tonnes, will be regularly transported to Mukran by ship over the coming months. Specialised teams from Mukran Port Terminals will actively support the handling of the components. This means unloading the cargo and handling, including interim storage. At Mukran Port, the TPs are further prepared for installation by installing additional equipment and materials. The modern berth 10 of the port's Offshore Terminal North is being used for the work. The berth, with its quay area and heavy-duty slab, makes it possible for specialised vessels to call at the port.

"Mukran Port is an important part of the European energy transition. It is one of the most important offshore ports and logistics hubs in the Baltic Sea region. Our port infrastructure is specifically geared towards the current and future needs of the industry for future forms of energy. We offer energy companies the necessary spacious and heavy-duty areas in our industrial and harbour area. Van Oord's decision is a confirmation of the efficiency of the site and the people who work here," says Harm Sievers, Managing Director of Mukran Port.

"Creating a sustainable energy system is one of the most important challenges of our time and it is becoming increasingly urgent. In recent years, Mukran Port has developed into one of the most important offshore centres in the Baltic Sea region. In addition to the excellent offshore terminal, modern and safe berths for crew transfer vessels have been established. By utilising shore connections, ship emissions can be reduced, making the port more sustainable. We are delighted to be working with the Port of Mukran once again and look forward to the realisation of the project with confidence," says Henk-Jan van Dijk, Project Manager at Van Oord Offshore Wind Germany.

About Mukran Port
Mukran Port on Rügen offers everything that makes a modern multifunctional port on a total area of almost 430 hectares with ferry, railway, multipurpose and offshore terminals as well as extensive production and storage areas. The harbour has sea connections to Sweden, Denmark (Bornholm), Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Germany's easternmost deep-water harbour is accessible to all classes of ships operating in the Baltic Sea region. Its location on the open sea allows easy access to the harbour without the need for pilotage.

Mukran Port also offers ideal conditions for the offshore wind industry: there are already several offshore wind farms within a maximum radius of 30 nautical miles, which will be expanded in the coming years.
