On time on the gift table: Toys from Smyths Toys roll into stores in time for Christmas / Logistics company supplies 21 toy stores in southern Germany and Austria from Straubing during the gift season
Straubing / Lauterach, November 13, 2025. Every year, the Christmas season begins for Gebrüder Weiss and Smyths Toys when the autumn leaves are still rustling outside. Eight weeks before the festival, the toy retailer's logistics centre in Wallersdorf near Straubing is bustling with activity. The highly automated warehouse is filled to the brim with pallets full of Barbie dolls, construction kits and game consoles. Eager warehouse specialists load the toys onto the orange trucks of the international transport and logistics company Gebrüder Weiss. Their destination is not the snowy home of Santa Claus & Co. in the north, but 21 branches of Smyths Toys in southern Germany and Austria – from 2026 even 26 stores that will reach as far as the Dresden and Chemnitz area.
Only 25 kilometres separate the logistics centre in Wallersdorf from Straubing, where Gebrüder Weiss operates its largest transport hub in eastern Bavaria with its own logistics terminal. From there, up to 20 fully loaded trucks of the logistics company take off daily in November and December to the Smyths Toys stores. In total, there are 380 vehicles per month – twice as many as usual. Delivery in cities is complex. "We have to plan exactly which vehicle goes to which store and when. Some branches are located in pedestrian zones and may only be approached at certain times. Some are not accessible at all with large trucks. We then use smaller vehicles there," explains Thomas Peklo, Straubing branch manager at Gebrüder Weiss.
"The proximity to Gebrüder Weiss in Straubing is a great advantage for us, especially in the high season. When our logistics center is full, we can simply fall back on the nearby Gebrüder Weiss warehouse. This allows us to ensure that all toys are in our stores on time," explains Robin Kühn, site manager of Smyths Toys in Wallersdorf.
Although Christmas is just around the corner unexpectedly quickly for some people every year, Smyths Toys and its logistics partner Gebrüder Weiss are well prepared: The planning and execution of the logistical masterpiece is completed long before the holiday.
