Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's logistics and economy are growing continuously. The advantageous location on the Baltic Sea south of Denmark and north of the German capital, innovative ports as well as good land connections significantly shape the logistics location. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, logistics companies not only find suitable areas for their branches, but also qualified workers, innovative potential and the necessary infrastructure to master logistical challenges. Research facilities are constantly working on new products and their rapid market integration. The training at colleges and universities for logistics-oriented professions is good, so that companies can fall back on qualified specialists on site. Universities and innovative companies work closely together to optimise logistics processes in transhipment terminals. IT solutions network hinterland transport systems and ports and contribute to the formation of intermodal transport chains in order to integrate Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's logistics into the European transport corridors ecologically and efficiently. The Logistics Initiative Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e.V. was founded in 2008 to promote the regional, national and international transport industry and its cooperation. This instrument is intended to sustainably strengthen the industry in the entire federal state and to promote innovations.
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has a long tradition of exchanging goods internationally via its ports. Since the Middle Ages, the state has been characterised by lively maritime trade. Today, logistics companies benefit from the important transport axes that intersect here. The connections stretch from Scandinavia to the Adriatic in the north-south direction to the Baltic States and Russia. The Baltic-Adriatic corridor in particular makes the location an attractive place to do business. 13 large and smaller ports with modern facilities provide a good basis for shipping traffic. They can quickly adapt to individual customer requirements and are both transhipment centres and logistics and industrial locations. Good sea and transport connections guarantee future-oriented goods traffic. Directly on the quay edge of the ports, many renowned companies have already settled in the industrial estates to conduct their business from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The seaport of Wismar is the most southerly Baltic Sea port and thus an optimal transhipment point for various goods flows. Particularly weather-sensitive bulk goods such as salt and timber are the port's core business.
The port of Sassnitz is located at the northern tip of the island of Rügen and is an indispensable location for goods traffic with Scandinavia. With the shortest route to Scandinavia or Russia, it offers numerous ferry connections to countries such as Denmark or Sweden with great logistical potential. As the only port in Germany with Russian broad-gauge rail facilities, it is extremely valuable for many companies. The port in Stralsund, in turn, plays a major role for the metal processing industry. The largest port in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is the Rostock overseas port. Over 150 companies, including Liebherr, for example, are represented here to produce, store, handle or prepare goods for shipping. Port handling cranes that can lift 200 tonnes and more are not uncommon in Rockstock. The range of services offered by the Port of Rostock is unique among German Baltic Sea ports.
Since 1990, the state has invested a lot in the expansion of roads and ports with the help of the European Union. The motorway and rail network is also very well established and provides low-congestion traffic arteries for the Baltic Sea region. The Baltic Sea ports are connected to the metropolitan regions of Hamburg and Berlin, for example, via the A 19, A 20 and A 24 federal motorways. The Berlin-Rostock railway line is an important route for fast freight traffic. The connections to the hinterland are also right and round off the strategic transport segment.
