Topping-out ceremony: Construction of the new Fiege logistics centre in Vienna is progressing according to plan

The logistics service provider Fiege is expanding its location in the Austrian capital. In a central location and in close proximity to the existing branch, an additional logistics centre is being built in Vienna for the 150-year-old family business. Completion is planned for next summer. The topping-out ceremony took place on Thursday.

Vienna/Greven, 11th October 2024 - Topping-out ceremony: On Thursday, the family-owned company Fiege celebrated the topping-out ceremony for its new logistics centre in Vienna. The modern property, which is being built on the former Unilever production site in 7th Haidequerstraße, will more than double the capacity of the logistics service provider from Greven in Westphalia in Vienna's 11th district of Simmering. Once the two-storey multi-user centre is completed, which is planned for early summer 2025, a good 20,000 square metres of additional logistics space will be available for customers from the fashion, healthcare and consumer products sectors.

The construction project is being realised by Fiege Real Estate. "As with all of our projects, we are also focussing on sustainability here", says Kai Alfermann, Managing Director at Fiege Real Estate. According to Alfermann, the new logistics centre is being built to high energy standards and has been awarded gold status by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). "It is an exciting brownfield project that we are able to implement here - and we are delighted that, following the demolition of the old halls that used to stand here, we can now slowly get an idea of what a state-of-the-art logistics centre will look like in the future."

Michael Jahn, Managing Director of Fiege Austria, explains: "Our new logistics centre offers the best international conditions for our customers, and not just because of its proximity to Vienna Airport. The good transport connections of our two central locations also ensure optimal access to the Vienna metropolitan area and the Austrian logistics market." This enables Fiege to offer customers from various industries efficient logistics solutions ranging from classic warehousing and transport services to value-added services, says Jahn. "In addition, our new logistics centre is designed for a wide range of automation options, ensuring maximum flexibility and long-term growth opportunities."

Thomas Steinhart, district head of Simmering, who was among the speakers at the topping-out ceremony, says: "It is impressive how quickly the logistics centre is growing and the construction project is progressing. And it is nice to see that the family-owned company Fiege is making a clear commitment to the Simmering location with another branch in Vienna. Logistics is a supporting pillar of our economy and therefore ultimately also of our prosperity. This is why we need companies like Fiege that think sustainably and long-term and are prepared to invest decisively in the future."

And Peter Scherbel, CEO at Fiege, says: "We are delighted and grateful that we can continue to grow in Austria. With this new building, we are counteracting the general trend of a shortage of warehouse space and can offer our existing partners and future new customers logistics capacities close to the centre. Our new logistics centre here in Vienna is another milestone in our 150-year company history - not only for Fiege Austria, but for the entire Fiege Group. I am already looking forward to coming back next summer for the opening."
