Mega project in Hamburg: Nagel-Group doubles logistics capacity and modernises extensively

Hamburg. Nagel-Group is launching an extensive expansion and modernisation project at its Hamburg site. Germany's largest food logistics company will completely restructure the site in the Allermöhe industrial estate. In addition to the construction of a new transshipment warehouse, the storage capacities will also be modernised and expanded. Nagel-Group is investing more than 60 million euros in this major project.

Nagel-Group currently operates on a 33,000 square metre site on Hans-Duncker-Straße in the Hamburg district of Bergedorf, and the size of the site will now be expanded to more than 70,000 square metres. Logistics capacity will also double, with around 18,000 pallet spaces available in future.

"Hamburg has always been a special location for our company. We established our first branch outside of our headquarters here in 1959. We have been based in Hamburg-Allermöhe since the 1980s and have expanded again and again. Now we are giving the go-ahead for the construction of a state-of-the-art logistics complex," said Marion Nagel, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors, at the laying of the foundation stone, which marked the official start of construction.

Nuts, spices and fish arrive at Nagel-Group in Hamburg from China, India, Vietnam and Colombia, while the logistics company ships cheese and chocolate from the Hanseatic city to the Middle East, Australia and the USA for its customers. "We use the seaport for global imports and exports. Hamburg is already one of our three largest outbound locations," said Marion Nagel.

The comprehensive modernisation and expansion is part of the largest investment programme in the company's history. "We will invest up to 1 billion euros by 2032. In our network and in our digital infrastructure," said Carsten Taucke, CEO of Nagel-Group. Hamburg is one of the most extensive projects being implemented. "We are also clearly committed to the topic of sustainability: We are investing in state-of-the-art refrigeration systems, will set up photovoltaic systems and are developing concepts for more sustainable delivery. An exciting project is already underway here in Hamburg with our corporate venture Leafr," explained Carsten Taucke.

Bremer Bau is developing the logistics property as general contractor. Completion is planned for early 2026. "We will completely restructure this open-heart location without interrupting operations. This will be a major challenge for all project participants," said André Pleines, Executive Director Real Estate at Nagel-Group. New warehouses and transshipment halls for fresh produce logistics will be built in several construction phases, as well as a multi-storey car park for employees and larger parking and manoeuvring areas for trailers. "This is a mega project that can only begin here today thanks to the support of the City of Hamburg, our construction partners and the entire Nagel site," says Pleines.
