GRUBER Logistics optimizes warehouse inventory with HoverSpect drones
Project completion in Pavia shows time savings of up to 75 percent
Auer / Pavia – Time is money not only, but above all in logistics. This also applies to warehouse inventory. In the summer of 2026, GRUBER Logistics implemented the project-by-project use of drones for this task at its warehouse site in Pavia, northern Italy. The key finding after cross-checking by the customer: a significant time saving of up to 75 percent, as often only one day is needed for inventory instead of four. The test in the warehouse near Milan shows the potential of the cooperation with HoverSpect, a provider of drone solutions for automated inventory processes, which the renowned logistics service provider started last year with initial trials. With the experience gained in Pavia, further test projects are to follow at the turn of the year 2026/27 in the GRUBER Logistics warehouses in Verona, Padua and Cesena.

"The successfully completed project in our warehouse near Milan shows that drones can offer concrete added value in inventory. In particular, the combination of speed, precision and additional information about our inventories and areas is interesting for us," says Manuel Scaramuzza, Executive Director Logistics Services & Solutions at GRUBER Logistics, outlining the advantages of the technology. "With HoverSpect, we have found a partner who creates added value for us and ultimately for our customers."
Lorenzo Rizzello, CEO and Co-Founder at HoverSpect, a Milan-based LogTech start-up, explains the requirements that characterize the product and the collaboration with GRUBER Logistics as follows: "Together with GRUBER Logistics, we succeeded in bringing inventory using drones from the test phase to its practical application. The most important result is not only the time saved, but also the proof that the solution can be concretely integrated into the inventory process of a warehouse and provides verifiable and usable data."
"Completing an inventory in one day instead of the usual three or even four days saves the user a significant amount of time," Lorenzo Rizello continues. "We are currently working on a solution that automates the battery change, which was previously done manually, to further speed up the process."
As soon as the conditions for the use of drones in Pavia this summer were created, the HoverSpect application enabled a largely automated recording of inventories. At GRUBER Logistics' Pavia site, these are mainly 30,000 pallet spaces, which were recorded by the drones in three phases over an area of around 22,000 square meters. The images recorded by the cameras of the flying objects were analyzed using artificial intelligence and then fed into the warehouse management systems. Information on the occupancy rate of racking systems and the detection of unsafely stored goods also improved warehouse management at the site in northern Italy. "Those who have the more precise data make better decisions," said Lorenzo Rizzello and Manuel Scaramuzza in unison after completing the tests.
