Fiege puts Autostore for Contorion into operation
The logistics service provider Fiege has successfully completed the ramp-up of the new Autostore at its multi-user centre in Greven-Reckenfeld. The automated system, which is connected to intelligent robot and packaging technology, will store up to one million parts for online tool retailer Contorion at peak times.
Greven, 27th February 2024 - The Fiege Group continues to drive forward the automation of its logistics locations. The contract logistics expert has put an Autostore into operation for its long-standing customer Contorion at its site in Greven-Reckenfeld. Covering an area of 2,500 square metres, the expandable storage system has over 75,000 containers and 35 robots. Special highlights include the connected 3D packaging machine and an intelligent picking robot that automatically picks the tools and consumables from one of the eleven ports.
Stefan Underwood, Head of Logistics at Contorion, says: "With over 500,000 products from renowned brands, Contorion offers the best range for small and medium-sized companies from trade and industry. The order volume and the requirements of our customers have increased continuously in recent years, which is why we decided to optimise our fulfilment. By installing the Autostore, Fiege has now created the perfect conditions for us to fulfil orders at short notice and continue to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction."
Fiege has been handling e-commerce fulfilment for Contorion since 2019. With the automation project at the multi-user site in Greven-Reckenfeld, the family-owned company is making a sustainable investment in the long-term partnership. Blazej Janik, Fiege branch manager in Greven-Reckenfeld, explains: "The B2B business is developing positively. Maximum availability of goods and the highest possible throughput are crucial factors for our logistics services. The Autostore provides the same service that would require an area of around 10,000 square metres for conventional storage. In future, we will offer a fully automated solution that will enable us to fulfil the high demands of our customer Contorion even better and faster."
Fiege has connected conveyor technology and a state-of-the-art 3D packaging system to the Autostore. One particular innovation is the pick-and-place robot, an intelligent gripper arm from Nomagic, which reliably picks the items from the retrieved bins thanks to its suction head. Meike Schmidt-Krenz, Managing Director of Fiege's Consumer Products business unit, says: "Together with our customers, we are looking for high-performance solutions to exploit the full automation potential in our logistics centres. On the one hand, our goal is to increase the throughput of our customer processing. On the other hand, we want to relieve our employees of repetitive tasks so that they can be deployed in demanding and value-adding areas."
