64 per cent less power consumption thanks to LEDs

The logistics company Taskin had the lighting in four warehouses completely modernised and saved costs from day one by converting to a modern lighting management system and LEDs - a project report.

A highly competitive market such as logistics constantly requires potential savings to be made and work processes to be optimised. The company Gebr. Taskin Logistics GmbH therefore planned to retrofit its four newly acquired logistics halls in Sprockhövel near Wuppertal for the future before moving in. Taskin would save considerable energy and costs by refurbishing the lighting system. The logistics company also hoped that better working conditions for the workforce would be achieved by having halls that were lit as required. Poorly lit aisles and shelves in warehouses are considered a source of danger and errors. The lighting conditions are often not sufficient to read delivery notes or order lists easily. This is where needs-based lighting becomes a competitive advantage.

With the support of lighting expert TRILUX and an installation company, Taskin had the four warehouses, including the delivery zone and the integrated office space, converted to LED technology. The halls were to be converted to LED technology in just two weeks. Financing and implementation had to be planned perfectly right from the start.

The result:

  • The dilapidated old system was replaced with modern, bright lighting.
  • LED significantly improves working conditions. Reading becomes easier, safety increases.
  • The expected electricity consumption is reduced by 64 per cent.
  • The lower energy consumption protects the environment.
  • The logistics company significantly reduces its operating costs.
  • The investment in the new lighting pays for itself in less than two and a half years.

Clever financing model without equity capital

Around 4,800 square metres of lighting had to be calculated in order to completely re-light the hall. Precision was required not only in terms of planning, but also from a financial perspective. The company wanted to minimise the strain on its liquidity. To this end, TRILUX developed a financing model with which Taskin was also able to maximise the public funding. The rest of the project was handled via a customised leasing model from a financial partner. The concept worked: The customer now pays less per month for financing, energy and the complete service than the old lighting system would have cost him for energy and maintenance. This saves the company money from day one.

The right products - quick and easy to install

Seven metre high ceilings and new high-bay warehouses defined the requirements for the new lighting solution. TRILUX used the E-Line LED continuous-row system in 4,000, 8,000 and 13,000 lumens with a light management system. Its high energy and economic efficiency as well as simple and uncomplicated installation made the E-Line LED the ideal choice. The light sources and the optical system are already integrated into the gear tray. All that was needed to install the luminaires were support profiles and the associated fixing materials. Low-beam and wide-beam luminaires make working in the daylight-poor halls easier. Small print on order forms is easier to read.

Thanks to the flat, closed surface of the  luminaires, the continuous-row system is also less susceptible to dirt and therefore performs better for longer - another advantage that makes E-Line LED the best choice for commercial halls. For even more efficient and needs-based lighting, the installation company is equipping the building with a customised lighting management system. Thanks to presence detection, the aisles in the high-bay warehouse, for example, are now controlled individually as soon as an employee approaches. If a forklift truck drives into the hall, the main aisle is illuminated first. If it then turns into an aisle between the racks, this is also bathed in light. Areas where no work is being carried out remain dark. The work process-orientated lighting control not only saves electricity, it also increases safety and comfort.

According to calculations, the new LED lighting systems and the lighting control system reduce electricity consumption from 242,174 kilowatt hours (kWh) per year to 87,533 kWh. In relation to the old system, the energy saving potential is 64 per cent - meaning that the installation will pay for itself in less than two and a half years.
